StarStaX is a free, powerful image stacking software developed by Markus Enzweiler for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It automates the process of blending hundreds of short-exposure photos into one continuous, high-quality star trail image, eliminating the noise and overexposure risks of a single multi-hour exposure. 1. Prepare Your Source Images
Shoot in RAW: Capture your images using an intervalometer to avoid camera shake.
Develop in Lightroom: Apply basic exposure, noise reduction, and lens corrections in a program like Adobe Lightroom.
Export to compatible formats: StarStaX does not accept raw files. Export your images as full-size JPEGs or high-resolution TIFFs. TIFF files preserve maximum image data but result in slower processing.
Isolate dark frames: If you shot dark frames (photos taken with the lens cap on at the same settings to capture sensor heat noise), keep them in a separate folder. 2. Import Assets Into StarStaX
Load source photos: Click Open Images (the first icon) or drag and drop your image sequence into the left-hand panel.
Load dark frames: Click Open Dark Frames (the second icon) to load your dark calibration shots.
Cull bad frames: Browse the list on the left and uncheck any individual photos containing unwanted elements like airplane lights or accidental flashlight beams. 3. Configure the Blending Settings
On the right-hand panel, navigate to the Blending tab to choose your stacking methodology:
